Space: 1999 Series 1 in High Definition
A Message from Scott Bosco

Back to Alpha News Service

To all those who appreciate the series SPACE:1999 I have asked Jerry Scott
to forward this letter to all message boards where your interest can be found.

As consultant for the series, in the past laser and now on DVD I have some
wonderful news. About a year ago I had send a formal proposal to both A&E
and Carlton (UK) making formal the idea of a 30th Anniversary Edition of
SPACE:1999. I had been pushing this almost from the onset on my involvement
after I saw the condition of the masters for year one and was told it
wasn't in the budget for procure better ones. The reception at first was
warm from both ends but last year Carlton UK became very interested after
they allowed me a pitch on the phone. I was told to write up a proposal
which was very well received and agreed that Sept. of 2005 would be the
perfect time for this to happen. I pushed, "Not since the moon left earth
orbit in 1999 has there been a home video event - until NOW!" Carlton
quickly examined the originally film elements and found they are in great
need of restoration for preservation. They are quickly breaking down. In
order to save them it was decided a major restoration was needed. Last Oct.
of 03' I met with New Video who handle the release of all ITC product for
Carlton UK in North America and they seemed very interested as well. After
that things got put on the back burner due to a merger between Carlton UK
and Granada. Now that is over I just heard on Friday 13, 2004 that Granada
wants to go ahead with the project. and their intentions are better than I
could have hoped for. The plan is to restore all of year one for archival
reasons. Then new HD (High Definition) masters will be procured with a new
5.1 mix. Since Yr2 was recently remastered it won't be touched again.
However I suggested that due to an various audio issues it also need to be
addressed. They said it would but later down the line, for archival
reasons. I then suggested it should be done about 1 year or 2 from now in
its own 30th Anniversary Edition, also in HD... they like the idea!

The point of this letter is a pleading to all those out there who are
sci-fi lovers and of course lovers of series. This is the time to act. This
is an extremely expensive undertaking; and unheard of. No sci-fi series,
including Star Trek, has ever been restored and mastered for HD. This will
be the FIRST TIME EVER Space:1999 will be truly mastered from its 35mm
sources. The public has NEVER seen this show in 35mm. TV stations of the
day, 1975, used 16mm to televise. To make sure Granada & A&E understand
they are doing the right thing I need all who care to write a simple letter
stating you will support the release of the show for each of the
Anniversary Editions.

Make it simple and straight to the point - no demands. (oh, and please sign
off with you real names not bogus character one like "Commander Koenig" -
yes I got some of those during the write-in for MESSAGE FROM MOONBASE ALPHA)

In all the years of my consultant I readily know of the disappointments of
the various releases. Now, finally, it can be what we all really wanted,
and more. I did suggest certain bonus materials as well, but first lets get
this okayed.

I've been there for 20 years trying to get this done right - please, I need
your help.

Alert all, because all will benefit from this - the new masters will be
made available to the world not just one region. So, from where ever you
are your voice will be heard.
Please email your (short) letter of support to
alphamessage@yahoo.com

Thank you all,

SCOTT M. BOSCO,
Consultant for SPACE:1999
