My memories of Main Mission: 2000 actually begin the afternoon before the convention. I arrived earlier than I had anticipated and did not know a soul. Although it was hot and very humid, I decided to wear my jacket with the Moonbase Alpha patch hoping that someone would identify me as being there for the convention. After a little wandering, who do I run |
into but Robert Ruiz (for those of you who have been locked away in an asteroid of living rock, he is the creator of the Cybrary, and co-organizer of the convention). Having corresponded sporadically over the previous year or so, we got to talking after introducing ourselves.
It was a pleasure to finally meet him. He was called away to attend to convention business, but not before more introductions were made. I was told that another e-mail pal was up in the Alphan Room exhibit under construction. So I went upstairs to meet Eston Dunn.
Once there, I also met David Penn, and I was kept in stitches with hysterical accounts of their road trip from Florida, while they waited for the rest of the Alphan Room exhibit to arrive. I also got to sit in the replica of Koenig's chair and get a close look at some of the other
displays provided by Robert Ruiz. After being stuck in traffic in New Jersey, Billy Boyajian arrived with all of his contributions to the Alphan Room and Keith Wilson exhibit, along with Tom Lowery (the organizer of the con) and Tim Mallet (the young man responsible
for creating those great Space: 1999 CD's from Fanderson, as well as the "Message from Moonbase Alpha" short film shown at the convention. After helping them unload the truck, I went down to the hotel bar for a few beers before getting some sleep for the big day. |
The Convention
Opening Ceremonies
The first
big event of the convention was the Opening Ceremonies,
when most of the guests were introduced. Martin Landau
and Nick Tate were unable to attend the convention, Barry
Morse was temporarily delayed, and Catherine Schell
arrived the next day. Here are a few pictures from that event. |

The Guests
The following pictures are in no particular order, as the convention was a wonderful blur of non-stop events. |
A moment to remember... Catherine Schell (in her first ever convention appearance) and Barry Morse together on stage. I had always wished that Victor could somehow have met Maya. This is as close as I could ever hope to get to seeing that dream realized.
That dream quickly turned even more surreal when Barry Morse decided to eat his breakfast while John Muir interviewed Catherine Schell. When he finished, he promptly got up and left, but not before Catherine gave him the most curious (and hysterical) look.
The Space: 1999 Writer's Summit was a fascinating look at the creative process, influences, and the ideas that the writers were trying to convey in their episodes of the series. As well as a revealing look at what really happened behind the scenes as they worked on the show.
A moment that just struck me funny.. John Muir has a little audio/visual trouble, just prior to a wonderful discussion of Space: 1999 as film art. I watch the show with a new appreciation of its use of direction and cinematography to tell the stories more effectively, now.
Catherine Schell looking as adorable as ever at the autograph signing table. For the life of me, I can't imagine what I was thinking when I did not get her (or any other of the stars of Space: 1999, for that fact) autograph. That is one regret I have from the Con.
Christopher Penfold (Guardian of Piri, Alpha Child, The Last Sunset, War Games, Space Brain, Dragon's Domain, and Dorzak), Zienia Merton, and Johnny Byrne (Matter of Life & Death, Another Time Another Place, Force of Life, Voyager's Return, End of Eternity, The Troubled Spirit, Mission of the Darians, Testament of Arkadia, The Metamorph, Immunity Syndrome, and The Dorcons)
John Muir gets a little nervous as the bids escalate for preproduction art (from Ring Around the Moon and Earthbound) generously donated by Keith Wilson for the charity auction. Pictured (from left to right) Keith Wilson, Robert Ruiz, Catherine Schell, and John Muir.
Grace-Lee Whitney (Yeoman Janice Rand of Star Trek TOS) at the autograph signing table. She also co-starred in an episode of the Outer Limits with Barry Morse and Carol O'Connor. A newly edited version of which was screened at the convention
Richard Hatch was passionate about his proposed revival of Battlestar Galactica. His promotional trailer was exciting and well done. Photo courtesy Mike Jones.
Jack Stouffer not singing. There are few who witnessed his show stopper the day of the closing ceremonies that will soon forget it! Talk about your "Operation Exodus"! Photo courtesy of Mike Jones
Aliens from other science fiction universes invade the convention with guns drawn! Where are all of the Moonbase Alpha security personnel when you need them? Perhaps they are busy posing for group pictures in the Destination: Moonbase Alpha exhibit... |
